For secondary servers (Friday)
- Open Software Center and check if there are pending updates.
- Open Management Studio
- Connect to primary in Management Studio and confirm server is secondary
- Check that there are no jobs running
- Update or restart the servers:
- If a message is shown that other users are connected, check with task manager if there are other active connections. If during working hours, contact active users before restarting.
- After restart, check if no further updates are needed and disconnect.
For primary servers (Saturday)
- Open Software Center and check if there are pending updates.
- Open Management Studio
- Connect to primary in Management Studio
- Check that there are no jobs running
- Failover to secondary server
- Update or restart the primary server:
- If a message is shown that other users are connected, check with task manager if there are other active connections. If during working hours, contact active users before restarting.
- After restart, check if no further updates are needed and disconnect.
- Failback to the previous primary
- Check special instructions for App servers in OneNote
Notes
- ARS auto-installs updates, so probably the only remaining task is to restart
Known issues
- If updates fail:
- Retry
- Restart and retry
- Escalate following week
- If secondary server is async
- Go to Availability Groups > Properties > Change Availability Mode to Sync on the secondary server
- After the failback, return to Async mode
